About this deal

If most people do not use a dust cover it is mainly because their table was not supplied with one not because there is some magic audiophile mythology not too. Clean records means better sound and this gun-like gizmo neutralises static charges to keep your LPs dust-free without the need for a messy cleaning spray.

But I'm a bit afraid using it away from my turntable - dropping the record while holding it with one hand. Some people talk about pulling the gun away from the record during the trigger release stage but I find no advantage in this practice. If you are playing your vinyl in a low humidity environment this will also add to the problem, as a reasonable humidity level allows the static to discharge naturally into the humid air.

On my other, whole-house system, I don't have the issue because the TT goes into a phono box that is grounded. So I put it on my lazy susan record cleaner and used a dry velvet pad to clean each side, using my igniter after each cleaning. The problem is most acute in dry climates when the humidity is low; this is because the surface moisture on materials makes for a good conductor. Milty does supply a nozzle which, when attached, lights up when the Zerostat is in use – well, it tends to light up when the device makes that cracking sound, actually.

I got the record clean with my cleaner but the static made the record sound so bad it was unplayable and the Cork slip mat would stick to it! It can be used on plastics, glass, ceramics, films, lenses, grid boxes, storage boxes, microscope slides, etc. First, if both the positive and negative streams are released almost simultaneously then neutralization occurs between these two streams and there is then little charge available for neutralizing static at the surface of the object to be discharged. Completely effective at neutralising static charges on virtually any surface without the need for sprays. An old trick is to point the Zerostat away while pulling the lever, then towards the brush when releasing.

So I got my worst-offender album out, verified it was still a static monster, and then held the igniter a few inches from the album and pulled the trigger for a revolution. OT- I live in Massachusetts and have forced air heat which really dries out the air in the winter in my house. A lighter creates a voltage that jumps from a point to a ground over a short distance to make a spark. You use it before or after playing, and any dust attracted and clinging because of electrostatic charges can be blown away with a breath.

I've heard that as well, but the environment here is *really* dry year round, making mold growth difficult in all but the most persistently moist areas (for instance, a pipe leaking inside the house's walls - which we had). This will reduce the amount of contact with the record from excessive cleaning and may help to keep the record in better condition for longer. The Zerostat requires some investment upfront, but when combined with good quality anti-static sleeves and a general understand of best-practice record care it’s an essential tool in the arsenal of any record collector with static woes.

ZEROSTAT 3: Lower Static and Dump Your Dust MILTY ZEROSTAT 3: Lower Static and Dump Your Dust

I have a problem with my headphone listening system and static: if the LP is static-charged, the signal cuts out (or down). Like I said before the stylus rubbing the groove puts the charge back on in a hurry attracting dust to the record and there is plenty of dust in the air just look into the beam of a flashlight in a darkened room. There IS a new Audioquest brush that is grounded via the body of the user, by holding its handle during use, thus perhaps it does not create a static charge on the LP. If you go for a vintage gun I would ask if they have the bulb as well as this usually gets lost over time. Similarly, pointing the Zerostat at the surface only for the release of the trigger will induce a negative charge.
