Various pathogens, including fungal spores, may accumulate in the water, particularly due to its stagnancy. Despite what the figures lead you to believe the reality is that they will only produce an average amount equivalent to a small glass of water, somewhere in the region of 100-200ml. The SPE consists of a proton-conductive solid polymer electrolyte and porous electrodes with a catalytic layer composed of noble metal particles. They are also more eco-friendly as they don’t require any refrigerants, which are integral to how compressor dehumidifiers work.

A fan constantly draws the room air through the dehumidifier and over the cool metal plate(s) and all the time more and more of the moisture condenses onto the plate and drips into the dehumidifiers water tank. Dehumidification with membranes can allow for water vapor removal without condensation; this avoids the energy required with the enthalpy of vaporization, offering high efficiency for well-designed systems. In these circumstances it’s relative humidity you should concern yourself with and not absolute, as that will have little to no bearing. For small bathrooms, in the unfavourable case even without a window, such models for regulating humidity are equally ideal as for the faster drying of towels and similar.As the refrigerant is no longer getting cold in the evaporator the warm air drawn across the system by the fan melts the ice, hence the need for a fairly warm ambient.

As we can see in the previous section above warm air can absorb more vapor than cool air, so although raising the temperature of the air within an environment with a constant water content will reduce the relative humidity it doesn’t reduce the total amount of moisture in there. Such dehumidification can be done passively with a rejected air stream; see Energy recovery ventilation. Although this system can work well in warm climates when the environmental temperature drops below about 15°C the surface temperature of the evaporator coils falls below 0°C and the ice formation becomes quicker and more aggressive, meaning the sensor has the unit in defrost almost permanently.Now, if you’re looking to extract moisture form the air within an environment with a less stable ambient, where the temperature has big swings and can fluctuate between, say, 5°C-35°C then it might be wise to opt for a refrigerated unit. In these circumstances dehumidifiers with electronic or air circulation defrost systems are pretty useless as they spend more time in defrost than they do dehumidifying! They’re the most basic and simple form of dehumidifier used today, utterly useless for anything much bigger than a shoe box or handbag but perfect for helping keep sensitive items safe.

At the more specialist end of the dehumidifier spectrum, desiccants are big, expensive and therefore usually reserved for large commercial or industrial applications where results outweigh costs more so than they would on for an everyday job. Most fan heaters these days, such as our FF range, come with thermostats so you can set them come on if the room drops below a certain temperature. In the bedroom, the humidity should not be higher than 50%, for example, to support a healthy and relaxing sleep. An emerging class of membrane dehumidifiers, such as the ionic membrane dehumidifier, dispose of water as a vapor rather than liquid. Following on from this, with fewer moving parts, they also tend to require less maintenance – there is much less that can go wrong with these machines so you are much less likely to need to get them repaired.

If the dehumidifier is operating at an ambient below about 15°C the moisture forming on the evaporator will freeze as it condenses, then as the ice builds up it reduces the effectiveness of the unit.
