It would be nice if the police were involved. Not only would it spice things up for me, I think it would also up the stakes and help with the far fetchedness so that the mystery could unwrap a little less conveniently.

When tragedy strikes, child and mother move to America. They will start over, a new life. She will live as a normal American teenager and have a normal life. However, the secrets and trauma from her childhood stay with her. Haunting her as she tries to live her new life. The storytelling in What Lies Between Us is flawless. The plot is divided in chapters with alternating POVs between Nina and Maggie and the first person narrative works extremely well in establishing a connection between the reader and the characters to help understand their actions. It has the perfect balance between character development and plot and keeps the reader guessing as both characters’ motives are slowly revealed through the multiple unanticipated twists. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not (yet) a mother, but Maggie’s action as a mum to Nina didn’t make sense to me at all. She wasn’t so much as protecting as she was enabling. Thank You to Netgalley, Thomas and Mercer, and John Marrs for allowing me to read a digital ARC in exchange for a candid review! With each module, you will receive instruction and engage in heart work, which includes reflective journaling and completing assignments.

In short this was the most devious , dazzling , intense and dark book I have read in a really long time!

Reader Reviews

The storytelling is fantastic. It’s like a game of malevolent tennis as each retaliates to the actions of the other. The tension between the main characters is palpable and you feel like you are treading on the most delicate of eggshells. The secrets that Maggie and Nina are hiding are jaw dropping, eye popping, brain numbing, mind blowing and breath taking in their magnitude. You are not sure whose perspective is the truth and who is the deluded liar but that become clearer towards the end where we see just how huge a maternal sacrifice Maggie has made. It is terrifying in its power and we learn that one character has anger that is so intense it goes beyond blind rage. There is mystery and intrigue throughout and we gradually learn the horrors of what has been covered up and the lengths that some people will go to to exact mistaken revenge. The story unfolds really well and is full of twists and as revelation piles on top of mountainous revelation you find yourself utterly incapable of putting the book down. The conclusion is excellent and you feel like you’ve been through the wringer with these characters but at least you can breathe again!! What Lies Between Us is a dark and twisted tale of intense love and hatred. Nina and Maggie live in the same house. Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. Everything appears normal at the start but there are many secrets between Maggie and Nina, secrets which when revealed could kill. Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies. I was born in Sri Lanka, the green island in the midst of the endless Indian Ocean. I grew up in Kandy, the hill city of the Buddhists. A city held high like a gem in the setting of the island. “Maha Nuwara,” is the name of Kandy in Sinhala, “the great city.” Or even, “Kande Uda Rata” the “land on top of the mountain.” It is the last capital of the Lankan kings before the British came to “domesticate and civilize”, to build railroads and scallop the hills into acres of fragrant tea. In their un-sinuous tongue, “Kande Uda Rata” collapses, folds into itself and emerges as, Kandy. But not candy sweet in the mouth because this place has a certain history. Things get darker as the story goes and I was on the edge of seat anticipating how this one was going to wrap up, but really I had no idea. Well, I have to say it wrapped up brilliantly and I loved everything about this one! I highly recommend it! I don't even know how I can go about trying to review this without spoilers, so I definitely wanna tread carefully here 0.0 ...!

There are some moments in this time frame that are a bit long and I wanted the story to move on, but it's her story to tell, and the pace actually seemed to make the ending pop even more for me. Filled with unlikeable, dysfunctional characters, secrets, lies and disturbing choices, 'What Lies Between Us' had a malevolent feel to it, which chilled me. The characters, with their co-dependency, got under my skin, and left me feeling anxious and quite sad.First off, I think Nina should have been listening to Ozzy instead of ABBA. But that's a whole other crazy train. Nayomi’s second novel, What Lies Between Us will be released in February 2016 and has been receiving early accolades as one of 2016’s most anticipated books.

Also, apparently this town has no police department? When a character goes missing their family knows who is crazy pants yet there is no investigation???

The point of this book is to uncover what lies between Maggie and Nina. Once you reach the part where the who is revealed (@70%), the rest just kinda unfolds like an exposition of the 5W1H—which was underwhelming since it basically meant the book was confirming my theory. I don't know if I just started paying more attention to book covers or if they have just gotten so much better but I've seen some fantastic covers recently. I love the cover on this one. Gorgeous!!! I hate it when people pity the life they assume I lead. And it’s not like it isn’t pitiful . . . just not for the reasons they assume.”
