About this deal

Just like the First Mate, the engineer also marks out symbols on his sheet, each showing the damage caused. The damages can either be in the reactor or the general circuits. Right then I knew that Captain Sonar was something special. Located deep in the heart of game publisher Asmodee’s sprawling booth on the Gen Con vendor floor in Indianapolis, a crowd had been growing around us this whole time. Few other games attracted more excitement, or larger groups, during the convention’s opening days. Before the weekend was over, it had sold out. The Radio Operator has to listen in to the other team, primarily the other team’s captain. Every move they make, the Radio Operator marks on her own map. The hook? She has a transparency, so she can move her markings around the map to figure out where they best fit, since submarines can’t travel across islands. It’s not google maps but it’ll do

Biggest challenge was getting the captains on each team to wait for their first mate & engineer to confirm "OK" before announcing the next move If you take any damage of any kind, you must announce it. Damages taken cannot be fixed, but some of the systems are self-repairing. sets of 12 role sheets (1 for each team, yellow and blue). Each sheet is two-sided: the light side is used for turn-by-turn mode, while the dark side is used for real-time mode. The directional systems can self-repair, however, other systems can only be fixed by surfacing. Other Abilities of the Captain

A Captain Sonar  csapatjáték. A hatalmas paraván (két, 115 centi hosszú darab egymás mellett) két oldalán a két tengeralattjáró legénysége: a lokátoros, a kapitány, az első tiszt és a mérnök. (Nyugalom, a játék játszható nyolcnál kevesebb játékossal és két és fél méter hosszú asztal nélkül is!)

The First Mate can activate only the drone and sonar systems, while the Captain can activate any system. The screen is gigantic and cool. The varying play maps are nifty. All the individual stuff you’re drawing on is dry-erase and very functional. Everything gives you the feeling that you are playing something with heft and importance, even if it’s just a bit of inspired chaos. That’s really too bad, because there’s something entirely enjoyable about being part of a team, but still getting a solid sense of competition that pure cooperative games don’t give you. Engineers and First Mates, workin’ together There is a turn-based variant, and I’ve played this exactly once and found that it sapped most of the excitement out of the game. At that point, it’s a reasonably good hidden movement game that becomes more tactical, but the reason this game made a name for itself is the real-time mode. In Captain Sonar you’re going to begin by splitting up into teams of mortal enemies (ideally of 4 or 3 people each). Then you’re going to place the very large screen the game helpfully includes between the teams so they can’t see each other’s ugly faces. Each team is comprised of four roles. The Captain is in charge and essentially decides everything. The Radio Operator has to listen to the opposing captain’s direction commands and tries to deduce where they are on the map. The First Mate keeps charges the various sub-systems (heh) in the vessel and communicates information between the Captain and Engineer. And the Engineer kind of has their own mini-game around keeping the submarine from falling apart in the water. They are a source of constant aggravation for their Captain. Together, each team will work in real time to find the other sub and destroy it. Comparative Advantage

Surfacing when the enemy is nearby is risky, and can leave a submarine vulnerable to a killing blow! So for me, I get a little bored with the Engineer or First Mate, and am overwhelmed by the Captain role. I love the game, but only when I’m playing as the Radio Operator. This is a pretty narrow window when, ideally, I’m opening up that role for others on occasion. Some have tried to fix this by usually playing with six, with one player acting as both First Mate and Engineer (which are usually seen as the less complicated roles). But they simply aren’t as fun for some, even when combined. The Engineer keeps the sub running and all systems active, if possible. Each time the sub moves, the engineer has to mark off an icon – if any icon corresponding to a particular system is marked, that system can’t be used. Certain combinations of marks will automatically repair, but if the sub has taken too much system damage it might take a hit directly. Fortunately, the sub can surface for repairs. Nekem nem lett a kedvenc játékom, nehéz olyan nagy társaságot találni, ahol valós időben lehetne játszani, anélkül viszont kicsit félkezűóriás a játék. Blurb from the publisher: 'Drowned in darkness, the crew is on the lookout for the slightest noise. Your captain braves the darkest depths, mapping unknown bottoms with new rare earth. All fear the surprises that these depths hold for them, which push the laws of nature to their boundaries. As said earlier, it’s advisable to have up to eight players for the game. However, if less, the captain can take on additional roles. For instance, if only a team of two, the captain has to play in addition the roles of first mate, radio operator, and engineer which is very taxing. And if three players, one of the players has to play both the role of captain and first mate. If you intend to drop a mine, using the marker, go to a point adjacent to your current location and write an M on the map. After this, you can detonate the mine. Then you will announce the mine’s location and if your enemy’s submarine is exactly at the position, they take two damages. And if they’re adjacent to that space, whether diagonally or orthogonally, they will only take one damage. Some players are more reticent to play the Captain role – that’s a lot of responsibility, or at least it seems like it. But the mechanics are simple, and I encourage people to give it a try. It’s not as bad as you think, and again – you’re working with a team. Your teammates can pitch in. There’s plenty of strategy to explore – I’ve played more than anyone I know as the Captain, and I’m still figuring out the best way to move, to find the enemy, to stay hidden. It hasn’t become an automated exercise; if anything, I keep learning new ways to put things together.
