About this deal

Fukazawa, T., et al. (2018). Effects of Chios mastic gum and exercise on physical characteristics, blood lipid markers, insulin resistance, and hepatic function in healthy Japanese men [Abstract]. Mastic is excreted by the resin glands of certain trees [3] and dries into pieces of brittle, translucent resin. When chewed, the resin softens and becomes a bright white and opaque gum. The flavor is bitter at first, but after some chewing, it releases a refreshing flavor similar to pine and cedar. Acidic saliva, Mutans streptococci bacterium, and Lactobacilli bacterium can lead to cavities. Researchers found that all three types of gum reduced the level of Mutans streptococci. Lactobacilli levels were slightly raised in the groups using pure and xylitol mastic gums. However, Lactobacilli levels significantly decreased in the group using probiotic mastic gum. Not that the future of mastic cultivation is in any danger, with an estimated 5,000 current producers arranged in communities and cooperatives amongst more than 20 “mastic villages” (the mastihohoria). Among them are Mesta, Pyrgi and Armolia, which are beautifully preserved, but the list is a long one.

The word mastic derives from the Latin word masticare (to chew), in Greek: μαστιχάω verb mastichein ("to gnash the teeth", the English word completely from the Latin masticate) or massein ("to chew"). Mastic gum is a resin that comes from the mastic tree, an evergreen shrub that grows on the Greek island of Chios. There may be health benefits of masic gum, but research into its safety or side effects is limited. The gentle, fragrant and pricey product is exclusive to Chios and has been cultivated here since the 1st century AD. It is also believed to have therapeutic properties. Tradition says that the mastic trees began crying when Agios Isidoros was tortured on Chios by the Romans. During Ottoman rule, the government and tax gathering again remained in the hands of Greeks and the Turkish garrison was small and inconspicuous. [38] Mastic tree ( Pistacia Lentiscus) is an evergreen shrub 2-3 meters tall, which grows slowly and reaches full growth after 40-50 years. It thrives in other countries, especially in the Mediterranean basin.Having high cholesterol and high blood sugar levels can increase the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Some small studies suggest that mastic gum could help people improve their levels of both. Yes, you won't find the mastic gum, which is known for its beneficial effects on digestion, anywhere else. There may be mastic trees growing elsewhere in the Mediterranean, but only on the island of Chios is mastic a miracle drop. This is due to a combination of 3 factors: There are about 20 medieval masticvillages in southern Chios and the experience of strolling within, and even between them, is magical. Particularly noteworthy are Pyrgi and Mesta, followed by Vessa, Armolia, Nenita and Patrika.
