About this deal

The revelations that intersperse this book, the hints at larger plots and dangers beyond what a ‘simple’ fantasy/heist book requires are more proof – if you needed it – that Scott Lynch is working on something bigger than we had ever imagined. With a total of seven books planned for the series, it is obvious that what is to come is like nothing we could have guessed at. Why do I always read (and love) fantasy book series where the authors take like ages for the next book to publish ???? ... I'm already waiting for years for The Doors of Stone, Winds of Winter, Oathbringer and now The Thorn of Emberlain ... but they are all books I would wait 10+ years for, because I know they'll be great and good books take time. Still. I hate waiting. Oh yes,” said their visitor mildly from somewhere behind him. “That would have been very clever of me, Jean Tannen. Leaving myself at the mercy of a strong man and his grudges.”

You heard,” Jean gasped, “that we’d finally discovered the cure for being born with a face like a stray dog’s ass.” Jean had faced many fast opponents in his life, but never one that dissolved instantly at his touch. That wasn’t human speed; it was sorcery.

Jean, listen. I took some of the money when we got here on the boat... . I hid it. Loosened a floorboard under the bed.” Did you really imagine I’d go to all this trouble and let you see where I’m taking you? I thought you’d prefer blindfolded to unconscious.” I do think the author’s writing has improved in this novel. He still uses the same eloquent descriptions, but the superfluous and convoluted information about the scenery are kept to a minimum. In the previous book it felt he’d spent paragraphs describing inanimate objects and irrelevant places; I was glad to see a more concise approach to his writing. I think he has got the balance just right in this novel and I can easily see this developing into a really strong series. I can’t wait to see where the author takes this in the future. its intricately woven - no movement, no scene, no word is insignificant. everything is so interconnected on so many levels. We’ve been snobbed off again,” said Jean, frowning. Despite the fresh air from the window the inner apartment still smelled of old sweat and fresh blood. “Zodesti won’t come. Not today, at least.”

It's true, that this book might be a little less Ocean's Eleven and a little more Grifters. But that's okay. Because sequels *need* to change and grow a bit, otherwise a series stagnates and dies.He said that life boils down to standing in line to get shit dropped on your head. Everyone's got a place in the queue, you can't get out of it, and just when you start to congratulate yourself on surviving your dose of shit, you discover that the line is actually circular.” Don’t be simple. Now, I know you’re a friend of the friends. I hear things. When you first came to Lashain you knew your business. Kept the peace, made your gifts, behaved. You clearly understand how things work in our world. So do you think Zodesti ran up and down the streets, screaming that he’d been stolen away like a child? Or do you think he sent a few private messages to people who know people?” The whole setting of the book took place in a completely different place than its predecessor, this time taking place in the island city of Tal Verrar and the Sea of Brass. Although I miss the city of Camorr for its beauty and resemblance with Venice, I do think that Tal Verrar and Sea of Brass gave the necessary new atmosphere to the book and series as a whole.

you guys, this story does not suffer from a sophomore slump. its a brand new adventure thats luring, nautical, and full of scoundrels. The Falconer was arrogant, vicious, misguided. He was acting in obedience to a contract, which we consider a sacred obligation, but I won’t deny that he amplified the brutality of the affair beyond what was called for.” Despite giving a 3.5 stars rating, The Republic of Thieves is still a great book. The rating reflects my disappointment more than the quality of the book itself. Although this is my least favorite installment in the series so far, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t read this book if you’re already a fan of the series. I personally think it’s amazing that Lynch was able to write three books with different settings, stories, and tones within the same series by using the same main characters. One last thing, there’s a high chance that the next book in the series, The Thorn of Emberlain, will be magnificent because The Republic of Thieves felt more or less like a setup for it to shine.

Edit Oct 2023 So, Winds of Winter is nowhere near in sight, The Doors of Stone will probably never be published, The Thorn of Emberlain probably neither...but in Sanderson we trust! The four secret novels are out and The Stormlight Archives is continuously progressing. I’m finding it hard to say much more about this wonderful book, as I often find to be the case with books in the middle of a series. The Republic of Thieves is everything I ever wanted it to be – a beautiful continuation of one of my favourite series, a tantalising taste of what is to come, and the perfect relief of finally meeting Sabetha. Scott Lynch has managed to push through massive pressures and personal concerns to deliver exactly what he promised. The pair of you,” said Patience. “I’ve been minding your business for some time now. Starting with the fragments I could pull out of the Falconer’s memories. Our agents retrieved his possessions from Camorr after he was... crippled. Among them a knife formerly belonging to one of the Anatolius sisters.” Whispers,” said Jean. This was much worse than the constabulary. Whispers Cortessa was a top power in the Lashani underworld.

No more waiting, no more promises, I'll have this book now, and the book is empty, then it's a bad book, and it will get a bad review. You wore your fighting boots and left your dress shoes by the wardrobe. And all of your weapons are missing.” The question is no longer if but when,” said Zodesti. “Look, you ugly bastard, despite the way you brought me into this mess, I’ve given him my full and fair attention.”

Oh,” said Cortessa to Jean as the tumult was winding down, “one thing more. Leone gets a minute alone with you in the corner. For his nose.” Scholar Erkemar Zodesti was regarded as the finest physiker in Lashain, a prodigy with the bone saw and the alchemist’s crucible. He’d also shown complete disinterest, for three days straight, in Jean’s requests for a consultation.
