About this deal

The On The Tabletop play-through articles catalogue our initial experiences with the game; as a result, mistakes will be made. On The Tabletop should also not be taken as a full review. These articles are simply our first impressions of a game. We are trying to create the most comprehensive guide to this exciting modern dungeon crawler. Log in, dive in, and help us expand it!

A single new XL Enemy with two Targa Plateau Threat Cards for Damaged Guardians and three Epic Threat Cards including one calling for two Guardians Searching by scouting ahead allows players to draw another map tile and place it on the board before running right into the room. This can give a bit of insight into the room and help plan out a course of action in case you get ambushed immediately after walking in. Grit We then bravely explored two rooms in the same turn, meaning that we had two events turn over simultaneously. The first was a challenge, that the Sorceress easily met and the second, in the Kitchen was our final clue, and also our final challenge. Three Oni appeared and stormed towards the Assassin who had ranged ahead. There’s also an exploration token that will prompt to add to the dread pile. As the growing dread pile grows, the dread of the actual players will grow because as soon as the objective is completed and the final boss appears, all of the growing dread tiles are flipped over and bad things start to happen. It could spawn more monsters for the final boss, or buff the monsters in the final fight. Whatever happens, it’s going to be bad.Lizi is a mathematician, the closest she's ever been to being a gamer is almost completing Lego Batman on the PS2. Her favourite games are Codenames and Zombicide. The Forbidden Fortress box is huge. It contains 27 miniatures of different sizes, including the 4 adventurers, 18 medium enemies, 3 large enemies, 1 large mini-boss and an XL epic boss. The miniatures do require gluing together, but the connection points are large, so entry level hobbyists won't find it too challenging. The miniatures are also made of a durable plastic, so feel quite solid once constructed. There are 2 ways to search. Players search around the current room and attempt to loot it, or they can scout ahead and look into an adjacent room. Searching the room can only be done once per game. Our group rolled well for the first few turns, but then began to fail rolls the further we progressed into the Forbidden Fortress. If your defense is a 4+ you’ll get a chance to dodge/defend and need to roll at least a 4. On these numbers, the lower number is more beneficial to your characters. If you have a 2+ roll that means the only way you can miss on the roll is by rolling a 1. Searching

Throughout the game, our three characters had been gathering experience and gold. The end results were, Lizi 365 experience points, 3 Dark Stone, Adam 235 experience points and 2 Dark Stone, James, 230 experience points, 100 gold and 3 Dark Stone. During a player’s turn, they can move and make 1 search. Movement is again handled through dice. 1d6 equals the movement value on one turn. Players can move onto any space they currently touch, including diagonal, but they can’t move through walls or any other characters (monster or hero). Works really well as a solo game. Even with one character: you'll be failing missions a lot, but you are more likely to get an interesting injury and a story to tell than you are to die.

If you absolutely hate dice, that may be a hard pill to swallow. I’m somewhat neutral on the topic myself.

There are quite a few things to remember, throughout the game, so having at least one experienced player in the group is required. I wouldn't recommend this game if this is the first adventure game for all players. It's a great hybrid product that blends a board game, with the hobby requirements of putting the miniatures together, along with the light roleplaying elements of the character creation and between mission actions. Shadows of Brimstone at first glance is a pile of contradictions and themes that shouldn’t make sense, but everything works so incredibly well. The Cowboys vs. Cthulhu mashup makes for such an interesting world that you’ll constantly want to keep returning to the game. The game comes with 2 booklets: the core rulebook and the adventure book. The adventure booklet you’ll be referring to for character developments and plot points that appear during your adventures into the deep of Brimstone. Both booklets are beautifully done and in full color and have excellent images throughout. The vast number of components also can cause a logistical nightmare as you search for a specific reference card that explains how a keyword works. The rules are split between the rulebook, hero sheets, enemy sheets, reference cards, event sheets and more. Games of Forbidden Fortress begin with building your chosen character. We had three players, James and Lizi both chose at random, using the character tokens, which are used in-game to randomly determine a character. Lizi chose the Travelling Monk and James the Sorceress. I wanted to play the Assassin, but suspected that we might need the muscle of the Samurai, but I also decided to leave it to fate to decide, and drew the Assassin random token. On The Tabletop first impressions articles are usually preceded by an Off The Shelf preview of the product, but our very own Tabletop Editor Travis really wanted to paint the miniatures, so we're combining the two into one article. This means that the start of the article will be an overview of the product, followed by details of our first play-through and then a report from the On The Tabletop team on their first impressions.
