About this deal

Over the years, the company would eventually be sold to Inver House Distillers — a company which owns a number of other Scottish distilleries in the country. That company would be sold to the Thailand based ThaiBev in 2001, who owns it to this day. Product Depending on your economic status, this scotch is just top notch. For those who don’t have to worry about money, this would still be a fine scotch to enjoy.

The decidedly compact whisky distillery sits in the gentle undulations of Moray, just to the north of Rothes. The Speyburn distillery is rather quaint with its pagoda roof and pretty stone buildings, indeed it is said to be Scotland’s most prolifically photographed. In 1916, Distillers Company Limited acquired Speyburn from John Hopkin and they subsequently closed the distillery for the Second World War and did not reopen it until 1947. During this period, two regiments from the Scottish Artillery used the distillery for accommodation. Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 20th Anniversary Edition Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2019 Fancy trying a Speyside whisky straight from the barrel? Of course you do. In which case get your hands on a bottle of Aberlour A’Bunadh. That straight-from-the-barrel strength will be around 62% – it’s released in limited run batches so the strength will vary according to exactly which cask it came from. Be brave and have a little sip neat, then add water until it reaches your preferred taste.

User Notes about the Distillery

The colour is a bright gold. Very honeyed on the nose, with lemon meringue, creme brûlée, buttery brioche, peach skin and strawberries-and-cream. A bit nutty. Lemon zest with water. Sweet, light, pleasant, inoffensive. Speyside is the busiest of all Scotland’s whisky regions, with more distilleries than anywhere else in the land, including many of the most famous names in single malt. Indeed, the world’s best selling single malt lists are regularly topped by The Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and The Macallan, which all hail from the Speyside region. The label is green with some metallic accents, which gives it a regal air. Overall, the design is simple and understated, which is personally my style. I also appreciate that the label is efficient with its use of space, being just enough of a billboard to telegraph exactly what’s in the bottle without obscuring the beautiful contents. Neat Quietly matured in hand-selected American and Spanish oak casks, this is a rich, vibrant dram – the essence of Speyside in a glass. Vibrant and fruity, warm with a long-lasting finish. It is never chill-filtered nor coloured. Taste: Quite well balanced, with fresh fruit, creamy vanilla and hints of spice and oak. Sweet honey notes.

In 2001, Pacific Spirits bought the distillery, changing hands most recently in 2006 when International Beverage Holdings acquired Pacific Spirits UK. Taste: Medium bodied with hints of toffee & butterscotch and a long, sweet finish. A global favourite, Speyburn 10 years old is ever the crowd-pleaser.Sitting proudly at the heart of Speyburn Distillery is one large wash still used for first distillation and two smaller spirit stills for the second. The wash still charges both spirit stills at the same time, an unusual distillation regime which helps us achieve a light yet flavoursome spirit. All Speyburn single malt is matured in air-dried oak casks seasoned with bourbon or sherry, to help the spirit fully develop its natural qualities.

With so many working distilleries, you can get just about any type of Scottish whisky from the Speyside region, but it’s best known for favouring fruity flavours ahead of anything peaty. Much of the more intense fruit flavours it produces comes from ageing whisky in Sherry casks. We also sampled their multi-award-winning 10-Year-Old, which is aged in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, and shows that the amount of time a whisky has been aged is not necessarily an indication of quality. A 25-Year-Old will obviously taste different than a 10-Year-Old, and will probably taste more complex, but depending on your palate you might prefer the younger whisky. My tasting notes told me that the most notable feature of the 10-Year-Old was that it was fruity, and tasted like apple and smelled like an apple orchard. Like many distilleries it was absorbed into Scottish Malt Distillers (the malt arm of DCL) but changed hands in 1991 becoming part of Inver House. Palate: Soft and light bodied but the barley is not shy and takes control. A bit oily. By mid-palate there is a nice sweet/tart interchange as the spices (mint of some sort) begin to exert their influence. Finally, the oak tannins arrive and bitter things out. Up to this point, this malt was really enjoyable and it is a shame better cask selection practices are not in place for their 10 yo.Finish: Long lingering finish, with enduring waves of enticing peppery spices and notes of sweet and creamy fruitiness.

Inver House Distillers was named Whisky Distiller of the Year 2016 (Whisky Magazine's Icons of Whisky) and Speyside Distiller of the Year 2016 (New York International Spirits Competition). Lest you all think that I only sit around drinking 90+ scoring whiskies, here is a review from the other side. The simple truth is that it is hard to get geared up to put out tasting notes on a less then stellar whisky. However, sometimes – just sometimes – you need to take a break from big flavored cask strength whiskies. So where is a whisky drinker to turn? Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Glen Grant, Glen Moray, Glenmorangie . . . or you could try:These are often rich, sweet drams ideal for after dinner sipping. But it’s also known for some incredible easy going whiskies, often described as having ‘grassy’ flavours alongside citrus and orchard fruit notes, that are ideal for those making a first foray into the world of single malt. There’s a light orchard fruit that’s very pervasive throughout the nose. Apples, pears, and apricots paired with honey and just a hint of malt. A touch of red licorice, hint of peat and some very mellow caramel round out the nose and create a very pleasant bouquet.
