About this deal

Keep a few pieces of excess tape on hand for patches in case you overlooked a small piece of a seam.It is a bit like keeping a puncture repair kit on hand.If you spring a leak or find you are not watertight, you have a little piece of waterproof tape to patch up those leaky spots. MORE TYPES OF SEAMS

The tape will become more transparent as it seals. Keep pressing until it is fully sealed. If there are any patches that have bubbles or unsealed sections, go over them again until the whole seam is sealed. On heavier-weight tent fabrics—about 68 Denier and above—seam taping is an excellent solution. That’s because the tape adheres to these fabrics well, holding tight for long-term protection. PLACEMENT - The tape must cover both the stitching and the seam.Trim the seam if necessary. Make sure you are putting the waterproofing side to the seam and not the other way around.Keep the tape on the roll as you go along because that helps you to know which side is treated.Waterproof tape is not double-sided.IRON - Steam irons are the best for pressing seam tape as you need a strong bond between the tape and the fabric. This is achieved both with heat and pressure. Make sure you clean the garment and degrease the seam area thoroughly before applying and you should be good to go. Since you’re reading this, you’re probably curious about difference between these solutions. And, whether one is better than the others. Let’s dive in. PRESSING TOOLS - A pressing ham is a great help and a pressing cloth as well.Create your own pressing cloth by using scrap fabrics, cut into long strips the length of the seams.

So do you need to seam seal your tent as soon as you buy it? This answer isn’t straightforward, as it will depend on the manufacturer and the specific tent itself. Most manufacturers waterproof the seams through a process called seam taping. This is where a layer of polyurethane film (or tape) is placed under the seams to trap any water from leaking into your tent. Please feel free to join us in the Twig + Tale Chat Facebook group to share your projects, ask questions, or look for inspiration. Sew 1/8 inch from the folded edge of the seam. The seam will resemble the seam on jeans when you finish this step. If you are sewing on a heavy waterproof fabric like canvas you are done. If you are sewing a light finely woven fabric go on to step 7.

If your seams are stitched and factory-sealed, as in the case of MSR’s Hubba series, but over time wear has exposed areas to leaks, seam sealing is much easier to do. To prevent infiltration, tent manufacturers have three options: seam taping, seam sealing, and creating a strong seam construction itself. Heat seal tapes (aka: hot melt adhesive tapes) used for seams have the flexibility to work with the most delicate of fabrics and under heavy-duty conditions. These tapes consist of multilayered adhesive films that are applied to sewn seams with a hot air taping machine. The combination of the adhesive and heat bond create a watertight seal.Lay the seam-sealing tape over the seam on the wrong side of the garment. Ensuring that the tape is flat, and that it covers the seam allowance and stitch lines.

The tape works in the same way, however the technique for getting the tape to lie flat along a curved seam is a bit different. Here, we demonstrate the technique for applying tape to curved seams, such as those in the Sou'Wester Rain Hat. Materials A tent with leaky seams is no fun, especially amid that afternoon downpour. But a tent’s seams are also its most vulnerable zone to rogue and insistent water. For polyurethane-coated material, we recommend the Gear Aid Seam Grip + WP Waterproof Sealant & Adhesive. Sew 1/8 inch from the original seam line. This will give extra durability to the seam on a light fabric.

At MSR, we’ve always used the highest quality fabrics, waterproof coatings and tape formulations. But as tent fabrics have gotten lighter, we found that even the best seam tape didn’t meet our standards for long-term performance. For 10 years, we’ve been researching a solution to this seam tape challenge on lightweight tents. Now in 2019, we’re excited to expand our new Xtreme Shield waterproof coating which brings with it, precision-stitched, factory-sealed seams. This seam construction is far more durable than traditional taped seams, and can be maintained over time so that you can ensure your seams stay watertight for the life of your tent.
