When installing flooring, it is essential to use the appropriate underlay. At Tile Superstore, we offer a wide range of underlay products to suit different flooring types.Carpet underlay is either made from foam, rubber and felt, with many different types and subtypes. Felt has fallen into disuse due to foam and rubber’s comfort and price benefits.

The only time an underlay is required is if there is a need to alter acoustics underfoot. In this rare case, the system needs to be dual bonded and typically needs to be a shredded rubber underlay of a very high density. This is the same rubber underlay that is used for timber and tile flooring also, and this rubber is composed mainly of shredded car tires compacted very densely. High-density underlay is needed for vinyl becuase the transfer of weight under foot goes straight through to the underlay. On the upper floors, masonite is probably the underlay of choice. Both FC sheet and ply would work, but masonite is lighter, easier to work with, and less expensive — all while doing the job equally as well for vinyl floors. If you’re looking for an affordable underlay to fit under a wood or laminate floor, foam underlay is the way to go. It’s comfortable to walk on, provides cushioning underfoot, absorbs sound and does a great job of keeping your room warm.Individual courses of Schluter DITRA Matting are cut to size. Solidly embed the anchoring fleece on the underside of the matting in the adhesive so that its entire surface is bonded and immediately work it into the adhesive using a float or screed trowel. Among other tools, an orbital sander is well-suited for this purpose. Please observe the open time of the bonding adhesive. When initially positioning Schluter DITRA Matting, it is advisable to align and position the matting while slightly stretching it. This is best done with an additional helper. Tightly abut the individual membranes. Note: If the matting is only installed as an uncoupling membrane, side edges and ends of individual courses do not need to be sealed with Schluter KERDI KEBA Sealing Tape. Installers in those days needed to be creative in fixing low spots, especially in a wood subfloor. Perhaps using multiple layers of plywood until the low spot disappeared and one of the early generation floor patch products to fill in the remaining spaces. Rubber underlay can be used in a dual bond application where both the flooring and the planks are bonded with adhesive.
