About this deal

Biollante, in her rose form, can constrict and grapple with an enemy with her many tendrils and mouthed vines, each of which are capable of spitting a highly corrosive sap that can blind an opponent. Awkward choice for feet aside, this toy was probably one of my generation’s first exposure to the character. As such, I do have a bit of a soft spot for it. The detailing is pretty great given its size and age and the choice to do six tendrils is nice. Like other toys in this line, it is nothing to really write home about. This is a solid release from a solid toy line. If it wasn’t for the feet and scale issues, this could have been one of the best of the bunch. Kobayashi combined the word violon, the French word for "violin," from this passage with the katakana character テ ( te), as he noted that no other kaiju used this character in their names. Kobayashi later stated that it was a complete coincidence that Biollante's name seemed to imply biotechnology. [6]

Biollante's regenerative capacity is further showcased in the comic series Godzilla: Cataclysm, when she is incinerated and reduced to a small chunk of plant matter by Godzilla's atomic breath. This chunk begins rapidly regenerating and growing, developing into a core and sprouting numerous vines and roses. Even while just a small regenerating core, Biollante maintains her ability to use her vines in combat, shown when she restrains Destoroyah and allows Godzilla to defeat him. Biollante's regenerative capacity seems to extend to other nearby plants as well in this comic, as she restores plant life in the devastated remains of Tokyo once she successfully becomes planted into the ground again. Biollante is not the tallest monster in the franchise either; the Heisei and Monsterverse incarnations of King Ghidorah, Mecha-King Ghidorah, Godzilla Earth, Keizer Ghidorah, Bagan, and the Hanna-Barbera Godzilla are all taller than her, while the final form of Destoroyah, SpaceGodzilla, the Heisei Mechagodzilla, MOGUERA, the Millennium Gigan and Monster X are all the same height as her. At the time of her debut though, Biollante's 120-meter Plant Beast Form was the tallest Toho monster, as well as the first to exceed 100 meters. Some of the first pieces of Biollante concept art were done by artist Kako Yodane, who had done a lot of concept art for 1970's tokusatsu shows such as Mirrorman. Yodane based Biollante's rose form on Darling Utsubo, a creature he had previously designed for Emergency Command 10-4·10-10. [12] For Biollante's final form, Yodane submitted a four-legged Biollante concept inspired by the Return of Ultraman monster Leogon, who was designed by him and also created by Kobayashi. Other Biollante concept art was also done by Kow Yokoyama, Yuto Matsubara, Studio Nue, Studio OX, and Shinji Nishikawa, who created near-final concept art for the monster. [13] Biollante also appeared in the The Godzilla Comic Raids Again living in space debris. She attempted to stop the Xiliens in their Earth conquest by battling King Ghidorah. Biollante was even able to absorb the space dragon's energy via a gravity beam, and transform into a plant-like King Ghidorah clone. But, even with her new enhancements, Biollante was defeated. According to Shinichiro Kobayashi, who created the story for Godzilla vs. Biollante, he got Biollante's name from a passage from the poem " Chanson d'automne" by the 19th century French poet Paul Verlaine, specifically the passage: Biollante is a Godzilla, rose, and human tribrid created by Genshiro Shiragami. Shiragami originally created a human-and-rose hybrid in 1984 by splicing the DNA of his daughter, Erika Shiragami, who was killed in a Bio-Major-authorized bombing of his lab in Saradia, with that of a rosebush, as roses had been Erika's favorite flower. It was later suggested that as a result of the fusion, the plant developed a level of sentience which could only be detected by those with psychic abilities, like Miki Saegusa.

Biollante's Flower Beast Form was originally going to look more like a lily, with a gigantic tendril extending out of its center. Biollante's name likely comes from the prefix bio (ビオ ?), referring to organic life, and the English word plant (プラント , puranto ?). Rose Biollante (ビオランテ 花獣形態 , Biorante kajū keitai ?, lit. Biollante Flower Beast Form) is Biollante's first form when it was in development. In her second form, the Godzilla genes took over and Biollante's body became an abomination of biological science. Biollante's second form had a head similar to that of a Mosasaur or crocodile and a maw with knife-like teeth, even on the interior lining. In addition, six large tusks, three on each side, protruded from the fulcrum-region of her mouth. Large numbers of vines and tendrils were a primary feature of Biollante. Some vines ended in sharp, spear-like ends, while others sported small, sharp-toothed mouths. Also, Biollante had four stubby, root-like legs that she uses to move, as well as what appeared to be meaty flesh underneath the tangled mess of vines and plant tissue. The fleshy surface was yellow and red-orange and had many wrinkles and lines, resembling a brain-like surface.Biollante shares many similarities with SpaceGodzilla, suggesting that she is more likely responsible for SpaceGodzilla's creation than Mothra. These similarities include tusks on the sides of her mouth, membranes on the inside of her mouth, rows of sharp teeth inside of her mouth, a screeching roar, and the ability to break apart into energy spores after being mortally wounded. Scaling wise, Biollante comes up a bit short. I’d say she’s the worst when it comes to scale out of all of Trendmasters smaller figures. She stands smaller than the rest, so if you were hoping to have her munch on Godzilla’s head, it won’t happen here. Articulation

Biollante escaped the Shiragami New Plant Research Laboratory near Lake Ashi in Kanagawa and began to grow exponentially, eventually appearing as a giant flower-monster with gargantuan flora blossoming in the lake. Sensing the existence of another monster with similar biological makeup, it used its fanged roots to take on Godzilla. After succumbing to Godzilla's atomic breath and disintegrating into glistening particles, it absorbed that same energy that mutated it into a plant monster with crocodile mandibles. The plant monster proceeded to move nimbly through the ground, causing earth tremors while attempting to to assimilate Godzilla as its prey. Biollante is Godzilla's only enemy in the Heisei series that is unable to fly in either her base form or final form; instead, she must transform into spores to do so. A Biollante named Sakuya was the guardian of the ancient Bio Forest, fighting to protect it from Desghidorah. A seed from Sakuya ended up on Godzi Godzi Island and grew into her humanoid daughter Erika, who befriended Little after he fell into her ravine. She and a pair of Matangos also from the Bio Forest ended up sending the Three Godzilla Brothers on a quest to help Sakuya protect the forest from Desghidorah. Toho (March 20, 1996). Godzilla Giant Monster Diagram Encyclopedia (3rd Edition). Kodansha. p.10. ISBN 406259031X. It's in my top 10 and is easily the best of the Heisei era. In fact, it and 84 are really the only Heisei movies worth a damn. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah isn't bad, but the four after that are a mixed bag of messes with vs Mothra and vs Spacegodzilla being some of the franchise's worst films. The 6-inch figures either had sound or no sound at all included with the figures. Included with them are collector cards. The Kmart exclusives come with tiny army men and a tank, but left out the collector card, while the regular sound versions come with the army men, the tank, and a collector card. Despite the size classification being 6 inches, some of the toys range from 5-6 inches. The 6-inch figures are:

In her final form, Biollante retains all previous abilities, though she does acquire an additional one, which is the ability to spit large quantities of radioactive corrosive sap from her large mouth (the radiation is clearly visible as orange energy spores within the sap stream). In the 1992 Godzilla, King of the Monsters manga, Biollante's sap retains its corrosive ability even if it is shed like blood, as Godzilla suffers corrosive burns to his hands after grabbing hold of some of her vines and ripping them in half.
