About this deal

Very descriptive sex scenes were dragged for many pages and her interactions with different characters in the books seemed to have little meanings. This April, Counterpoint Press released Black Swans (1993), a wistful collection of nine autobiographical tales from the 1980s and '90s. The recipient of this copy was planning to leave Hollywood, and this may have been a presentation copy, as Babitz inscribed it twice in the week of publication, two days apart, in three colors of ink.

LARB publishes daily without a paywall as part of our mission to make rigorous, incisive, and engaging writing on every aspect of literature, culture, and the arts freely accessible to the public.Although she reconsiders the moment she sent the piece more than once, she had decided she would “become art, not decoration”. If anything her abilities only sharpened, her ways of linking certain self-obsessions with the wider world growing exponentially. Yet as dispensed as Babitz's people try to be, they never are far from their fears and insecurities—and her wisecracking, ain't-it-the-truth-honey voice is just about perfect in illuminating the fact. don’t quite understand why this is labelled ‘fiction’ and why it also says that on the back cover, because to me it’s clearly memoir essays about her life, but maybe that’s just for legal reasons as she’s talking about real people. Nassim Nicholas Taleb in his book The Black Swan, The Impact of the Highly Improbable, and his subsequent books, his latest being Skin in the Game explores this idea by looking at how society deals with seemingly random happenings and suggests ways to make our world black-swan-robust, in other words a society where we reduce the impact of events such as the market crash of 1987, or CV-19 and exploit the positive ones such as the internet. The subject of these nine stories by Babitz ( Sex and Rage) is Hollywood: brilliant and beautiful couples who somehow get along; charming yet moody men and their odd needs; and "Eve," the narrator, who cautiously reveals in herself the vices of a naughty but not really bad girl.Mary-Jane’s debut poetry collection Heliotrope with Matches and Magnifying Glass is published by Pindrop Press. I love that it’s almost the opposite of SEX AND RAGE as it’s a more mellow and sober Eve, but still captures her amazing effervescent, humorous, and intensely personal style.

Everything is fine and everyone is supposed to be happy if HE cheats, but if SHE does it she is a hoe! Once this happened the term’s meaning transformed: the black swan became a symbol of the improbable. Babitz is sometimes portrayed as just a party girl who got lucky, and maybe just a slightly smarter Edie Sedgwick, but that misses the mark by a long shot. I particularly found myself going back to where she wrote, “There are half a dozen moments in Black Swans that feel disturbing in hindsight (Eve’s lack of political consciousness is hard to read in 2018. If you are struggling for inspiration try developing a story combining a character from one of your story ideas with a predicament or setting from another.Babitz’s contradictory views on male-female dynamics — namely her enthusiastic support for sexual liberation, opposed by this frustrating concept of a female intellectual binary that only serves to appease insecure men — is somewhat understandable in the context of the inherited gender roles that were still looming large when she was growing up in the 1950s and early ’60s. If you are at a loss for a seed idea, use a plot generator site (there are a variety of them on the web) for the same reason. A., but it really takes one to know one, and Babitz, (the wise Hollywood High grad), is sly, wry and sometimes surprisingly vulnerable.
