About this deal

Overall this newcomer is clearly a completely different beast to the old lens, and as the old 18-55mm had an unusually high reputation for image quality (for a kit lens at least), we will be interested to see if the new version maintains this standard.

When used on DX cameras, it sees the same angle of view as a 28~85mm lens sees when used on a 35mm or FX full-frame camera. Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The iPhone 15 Pro Max stretches into new telephoto territory with its tetraprism design and 5x (120mm equivalent) reach. If On is selected, vibration reduction will take effect whenever the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. What’s more, I repeatedly forgot to re-set the original setting (getting back to normal autofocus), and hence I ended up with a handful of out-of-focus shots. The one I am reviewing has a built-in optical image stabilization system known as “Vibration Reduction” (VR). Vibration Reduction (VR) system: Enables more stable handheld shooting and lets you shoot at up to four stops slower.

As usual, chromatic aberrations are highest at the wideangle settings (18mm and 24mm), and become essentially negligible at telephoto.bigger or camera-original © file to explore on your computer (mobile devices rarely display full resolution images properly). At 35mm it's just a little softer in the corners, but with no lateral color it's sharp enough for anything. The lens is just 76 mm long when extended and in use and boasts a retractable lens mechanism that makes it a mere 59. I have tested this lens on Nikon DSLR bodies D5300, D7100, Nikon 1 J5 (paired with FT-1 adapter), and D750 – all worked great, except that with D7100 and D750, I was not able to switch off the VR function (see more below). Part of Nikon's new "P" series of lenses, it uses a pulse motor (utilizing stepping motors) for ultra-fast, near silent autofocus and two Aspherical lens elements for outstanding optical performance.

Despite its compact size, the new lens features Nikon's Vibration Reduction system for clear, blur-free images, whether you're taking a wide-angle group portrait in low light, or zooming in to capture subjects. Even if VR can be turned off in some bodies, I still think it is not the optimal solution: it is easy to forget about the in-camera setting and shoot with VR turned off. The most difficult thing for a zoom to do well is to be sharp at its tele setting wide-open, and here the 18-55mm AFP is wonderfully sharp.MPB will also keep you informed about the status of your gear at every step of the way and the whole process is carbon neutral. Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This is not to say that you will not find any green and pink edges in the contrasting areas of your images. Nikon's 18-55mm P is extraordinary in that unlike every other 18-55mm kit lens, its new stepper autofocus motor lets it focus essentially instantly, even in near total darkness, even on the cheapest D3300 camera. It is more than capable of delivering sharp images, and the compact, lightweight design will make it a perfect travel companion.

The 18-55 VR performs quite well here, with falloff only likely to be an issue wide open at 18mm and 24mm, and disappearing on closing the aperture one stop.

Autofocus will resume when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway (or the AF-ON button is pressed) a second time. I found myself in situations when I was glad I could mount this lens on my D750 and get decent results (such as night photos of architecture).
