Focus & Calm: Acts as a great fidget tool to help individuals concentrate and offer a sense of calm. Puffballs hold the record for producing more potential life than any other living thing on earth. A single average-sized puffball can produce as many as seven trillion spores. The final step is to take the jar of spores and water that you mixed and pour them out onto your lawn, or some other place where you want puffballs to grow. Battering and frying is another popular way to cook up puffballs. Although this is the least healthy approach, so it’s not the best if you’re looking for something a bit lighter. Puffballs are a ‘Decay Fungus’ and play a massively important role in the care of our environment. Along with the likes of Oyster Mushrooms and Honey Fungus, they are one of the few living organisms that are able to breakdown and encourage decomposition of the toughest material in wood; Lignin. Without them, our planet would be covered in fallen trees and organic matter to such a depth, it would be extremely slow and difficult to continually break it all down.

But beware, as some species of Earthball can remain white in the middle; though they are still much firmer to the touch and without the spongy effect inside. The skin will still be tough and warty. Puffballs aren’t mushrooms that you usually see at the grocery store, or even at farmers markets. So most people are unfamiliar with them. Lay the coated puffball fries onto an ungreased cookie sheet, not touching each other. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the crust is golden, or fry them in a skillet in several tablespoons of oil, turning to fry each side until golden brown.

You can attempt it anywhere, but it’s best to place the spores somewhere similar to the environment where you found the original puffball if possible. First find a mushroom without gills, spines or pores under the non existent cap! Basically, find a mushroom that either looks like a ball or a ball with an elongated stem. Pictured right are young Stump Puffballs. Inside, the mushroom should be pure white with a spongy flesh and nothing else. Young fresh edible Puffballs have white spongy flesh all the way through the mushroom. See the Common Puffball sliced through below right. Cooked puffball has a texture kind of like tofu, but more soft and melting (a bit like a sugarless marshmallow). You can use puffball just like you would tofu and most other mushrooms in recipes. I still have so many ways I'd like to try it, so I hope I find some puffballs again next year.When you get the puffball home, start by filling a one gallon jar with water. To maximize your chance of success, try to use non-chlorinated water.
