Our team is made up of book lovers who are dedicated to sourcing and providing the best books for kids. This book is set in Dread Wood High School and its grounds on a Saturday detention session for four students who got a bit out of control during a lunch break. Are you telling me one of them is always stood on the school field whistling or humming so an errant dog sized spider doesn’t gobble up an unsuspecting student? Overall, this is a fast-paced book that I loved so much and can't wait for the next book in this series. Panic then sets in when the detention supervisor is dragged underground by something… you may be able to guess what from the clues but who and why is Angelo being targeted?

Like most people,each member of the group had their own personal issues and were each harbouring a secret that may or may not have been connected to the events that were currently unfolding. I loved that while we follow Angelo because he is the MC, we learn about the characters along the way.They are chucked into this wild race-against-time plot where everything goes wrong and the impossible happens, and that brings them closer.

Angelo and his friends are used to battling horrifying creatures at school – giant spiders that fire poison darts, brain biting worms that burrow into your flesh and vampire birds that drink your blood! They know each other by name, reputation or being in classes together at primary school, but have barely spoken to each other in years.Of course, no cast of a thrilling adventure isn't complete without the villains of the story and oh,boy, the bad guys of this tale were certainly sinister and creepy and not just a sandwich but a whole hamper short of a picnic.

Yes, I saw the end coming (I'm in the mid-30s, I am not the target audience), but I would have hoovered this up if I was younger and was more into creepy/spooky reads. L. Stine, this book creeped me out just as much as Stine's legendary Chicken Chicken and reminded me of Christopher Pike's Spooksville. Dread Wood is a YA spooky and creepy story to really make you not want to get a detention at school! During detention Angelo and the other children begin to wonder why Mr and Mrs Latchitt (the caretakers) keep humming and whistling the tune of incy windy spider.I feel like I got to know more about Angelo the most, but this was mainly because it was him narrating the story, so we saw it through his eyes.
