Guiding and Transport

TS is able to provide guides for when you are visiting the doctor/dentist/optician etc., doing some ‘special’ shopping (such as buying technology, gifts or a special outfit) or for special events like going on a day trip.

TS offers a guiding service to any medical establishment in the area, using trained volunteers who can meet you on arrival at the hospital and stay with you to act as a guide to the appropriate clinic. It may be possible to provide transport to and from the the appointment, either with a guider who drives, or separate transport and guider.

Tameside General Hospital has its own guiding service, where volunteers who have been trained in guiding people with visual impairment can meet you on arrival at the hospital. To access Tameside General Hospital’s service you can call the Guide Co–ordinator on 0161 922 5335, or TS staff can call and book on your behalf if you prefer.

For all guiding and transport appointments, it is helpful if you can book them with TS staff at least a week in advance, so that suitable volunteers can be arranged.

Two groups who can provide transport on a more regular basis (once you have registered with them) are:

  • Ring and Ride – is a company providing minibus transport with the ability to take wheelchair users. It is best to ring the day before to book a place and also let them know if you are using a wheelchair. For more information and an application form ring on

    0845 688 4933.

  • Miles of Smiles is a voluntary organisation providing, for a small charge, transport to medical appointments. It is best to book at least a week in advance. For more information and an application form ring the Transport Officer at the Volunteer Centre Tameside on 0161 339 2345.

If you need help applying to either of these organisations TS staff can assist with the application form.

TS also publishes a short transport guide covering issues such as bus passes, travel vouchers and other transport related issues.
